What's more relaxing than a vacation in Iceland? I don't know, but for sure a lot of things compared to my recent one. 🙃

When I planned the usual yearly vacation with my parents, we said: "Let's not do anything too adventurous. We will stay a while in Reykjavik and do some trips around, just to stay safe." It turns out that our risk management was not calibrated to consider the risk of an accidental stumble on a walkway, because my father fell and broke his pelvis on the third day.

After that, it was the beginning of the real Icelandic experience and the end of the tourist one. It took twelve days to organize a flight on a stretcher. In the meantime, I experienced the hospital management like a local, taking bus rides every day to visit him. In the afternoon, I still managed to visit some public pools and parks.

What's my takeaway from this experience? You can plan and try to minimize risk to the absolute minimum, but life will always be unpredictable. This could be the motto of an insurance company (which we were happy to have), but also a lesson for your plans. It is good to have them, but ultimately, you just have to see what comes and be prepared to surf on unexpected waves. 🌊

P.S. Better to always put an extra pair of underwear in the suitcase, you never know... 🩲
